Valencia bizarrely punished by Uefa for wearing neck warmers with an Adidas logo

Valencia have been charged by UEFA over a small Adidas logo on their neck warmers. The La Liga club will find out on October 18 whether they will be fined for the logo on their kit at Old Trafford last night.

UEFA allows a manufacturer’s logo on shirts, shorts and socks, as well as playing shirts and warm-up tops.

But Valencia players could be seen wearing the branded ‘snoods’ in Manchester – despite the fact it was close to 12C at the Theater of Dreams.

The logo may be small – but rules are rules.

It is one of the few accusations made by UEFA in its quest to tighten sponsorship and kit regulations in the Champions League, their premier club competition.

Teams are allowed one sponsor’s logo on the training top, no larger than 200cm square, while the sponsor on the jacket cannot exceed 20cm square.

Regulations are broken by clubs from time to time, and a manufacturer’s logo is one of the minor offenses any club will be charged with.

Clubs are also not allowed to advertise tobacco products or alcoholic beverages over 15 percent abv.

When playing in UEFA competitions, clubs also have to abide by national regulations, which is why Liverpool had to play without a sponsor when they played in France when Carlsberg was their headline partner.

The country has outlawed alcohol and tobacco sponsorship at sporting events since 1991.

Valencia earned a 0-0 draw with Manchester United, as the home side were panned for another under-par performance.

United were also charged with a late arrival at the ground and a late kick-off as they ended the stalemate.

The La Liga club were accused of setting off fireworks at Old Trafford, with both clubs due to meet on 18 October.
