How can you use LEGO in the most useful way?

With most of the world LEGO stuck indoors right now, we all have a lot of time on our hands. There’s never been a better moment to tackle a difficult, but rewarding new project.

And so begins this month’s #PopMechProChallenge.

Starting today, we’re throwing down the gauntlet once again and asking you to build with us for an entire month. Your mission: Build something useful with LEGO, and complete your project by the end of April.

You can use LEGO bricks to build anything, from self-lacing shoes to prosthetic arms. And we’re still in awe of our friend Charles Anderson’s recent epic quest to build a 20,000-piece LEGO Star Destroyer.

It took Charles hundreds of hours to design and build his badass LEGO version of the iconic Star Wars ship. Think you can do something better in the next 30 days? We can’t wait for you to try it.

Two simple rules: It must be your own brand-new creation, and you must make sure you show your work in progress on Instagram using the #PopMechProChallenge hashtag.

All month long, we’ll be sharing your builds, answering your questions and offering our tips. (And we may even have some special guests take part in the challenge.)

At the end of April, we’ll select our favorite projects and feature them in the next issue of Popular Mechanics.

What can you use LEGO for?

Lego pieces can be assembled and connected in many ways to construct objects, including vehicles, buildings, and working robots. Anything constructed can be taken apart again, and the pieces reused to make new things. The Lego Group began manufacturing the interlocking toy bricks in 1949.
