However, the victory was overshadowed by a shocking event that occurred earlier in the evening. Will Smith stormed the stage and smacked Chris Rock across the face after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith while presenting the award for Best Documentary. Rock had earlier cracked a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith. After the altercation, there was a brief moment of stillness on the broadcast as Smith continued to swear at Rock.

Smith reportedly told Rock during the ceremony to “keep my wife’s name out of your ==== mouth!” This was confirmed by international transmissions of the event.

Smith then proceeded to address the incident fo. “I would want to offer my sincere apologies to the Academy, as well as to every nominee. This is a wonderful time in history. I am not overcome with emotion because I have won an award. It is not about coming out on top; rather, it is about having the ability to shed light on everyone involved. He continued by extending his gratitude to Venus and Serena Williams, as well as a significant portion of King Richard’s cast and crew.

With King Richard, Smith has earned a nomination for the prize for the third time in his career. It is for the main part in a biographical drama, just like the previous two times, which were for the films Ali (2001) and The Pursuit of Happyness (2006).
