Angelo Casemiro, an impressively talented 17-year-old engineer, decided to build the bot as a gift for his father when he realized that the smaller version of the Sphero was too expensive and hard to find. Over the course of a week, he and his dad built it step by step, and luckily for you, they documented the whole thing in great detail:

The basic components are a beach ball, a styrofoam head, and a paper mache shell built around magnets that connect everything on the outside to the DIY mechanical structure underneath. Even if you don’t want to go through the trouble of making a giant BB-8, the detailed instructions are impressive and fascinating.
