How to Repair Copper Pipe Leaks without Soldering

How to Repair Copper Pipe Leaks without Soldering: A water leak is a homeowner’s nightmare, but there’s a good chance you can fix it yourself without calling in an expensive plumber. Pinhole leaks are common and the only way to fix them is to remove the leaking section of pipe and replace it with copper, PEX, or PVC pipe. Copper and PEX piping are the preferred alternatives and can be used to replace leaking pipes using shark bite couplings.

Start by turning off the main water line to your home and bleeding the water system so you don’t get wet when opening the pipes. Then use a pipe cutter to remove the leaking part. Round autocue pipe cutters work great because they can be used in tight spaces and cut the pipe as you turn it clockwise.

The video below, from Home Repair Tutor, shows the process in detail, and how easy it is.

After removing the old pipe you will need to attach a shark bite coupling to each end of the remaining water line. Use a shark bite depth tool or simply measure your pipe based on its diameter, and mark how deep your shark bite couplings should sit on the pipe. You will need to deburr the new and existing pipe ends and use an emery cloth to smooth the ends.

Once each end is ready and you’ve measured and cut your new pipe, insert it firmly into the shark bite fitting and you’re done.

Plumbing problems are often left to the professionals, but if you’re willing to make a quick trip to the hardware store, you may be able to repair a pinhole leak yourself.
